2019 Varsity Previews


Two legitimate contenders for section titles hilight the 2019 editioin of the Hughson Supercross.  On the girls side, the Coyotes of Madera return to the supercross after a 1 year hiatus. They bring with them Unique Ford, the defending Central Section Division II champion.  On the boys side, Liberty Ranch arrives on the scene after a multi year absence, bringing with them Christian Martinez the defending Sac Joaquin Section D4/D5 1600m champion.

Matinez, who ran 15:36 earlier this season at the Capitol Cross Challenge, is joined by a host of runners, all highly ranked in their individual leagues and ready to race this Saturday.  Pitman High of Turlock brings the top 2 runners in the Central California Athletic League: Christian Balderas and Efren Sanchez.  In additioin to Martinez, Liberty Ranch brings Brandon Birkes, who has run 16:37 this season.

Pleasant Grove, of Elk Grove brings Aiden Singh.  Singh has been to Supercross many times and actually holds the frosh-soph meet record.  He was second at the early season Kim Duyst Invitational, and will be looking to use his course knowledge to move up one place from that performance and take home a gold.    From the Trans Valley League, Jonathan Chavez of Hilmar and Dario Salinas of Hughson are both contenders for a high placing.  Chavez has run 16:17 on the season and is currently ranked #2 in the league, while Salinas was 3rd in that league's championships last year.

Lodi brings a solid varsity squad led by the very even 1-2 punch of Lucas Fonda and Luke Petersen.  The two lukes will be looking to lead a very tight Lodi pack to a team victory on Saturday.  



Girls Preview

Ford of Madera who has already run 18:20 on the Woodward Park 5k course this year and is a bonafide contender to repeat as section champion is joined by teammate Linda Perez who is a fine runner in her own right and has run 19:10 on the venerable state championship course.  Together, these two will give Madera the strongest 1-2 punch in the field.

From the Trans Valley League comes Elizette Ysias and Karina Duran.  Ysias has placed in the top 7 of the Sac Joaquin Section Championships each year she has been in high school.  Duran has great speed on the track (2:21 for 800) and is having a solid season, coming in as the leagues #4 
runner.

Out of the powerhouse Delta League, comes Kelli Vierra and Sophia Livingston of Elk Grove High School.  The two have both run 20:27 for 5k this year and are looking to make a splash in Hughson

All the way from the Castroville and the Pacific Coast Athletic League comes Andrea Villegas of North Monterey County.  Villegas will be looking to represent the Central Coast Section well in an inland meet.

And from way up north, Woodland High School returns for a second year, bringing Mahalia Quintana.  Quintana won the Frosh Soph Division at Supercross last year with a time that ranks #2 all time for our meet.
